De Havilland Mosquito A52-600

De Havilland Mosquito A52-600

When checking our email one morning I read one asking if we could help out with a model for a presentation from a group completing an RAAF course in Adelaide. The Squadron the course was conducted at, No. 87 SQN, once flew the beautiful “Wooden Wonder” the DHA.98 MOSQUITO. The squadrons first Australian-built “Mozzie” was A52-600 and was a Photo-Recon PR.40 version.

It was decided to construct the model in a scale of 1:48 and the Tamiya Mosquito kit was used to build it. It was built mostly straight out of the box except for some new aerials which were made from brass to make sure they would survive being bumped. The model was painted in a Intermediate Blue overall with highlighted details. New decals were produced on the laser printer and applied. Very few markings were carried on the aircraft except for the RAAF roundels and a small aircraft serial on the rear fuselage. The model was mounted on a clear acrylic stand with an appropriately engraved plate from the course graduates to the Squadron for their efforts during the course. The model was presented to the OC of 87 SQN upon their graduation and it resides in their trophy cabinet at RAAF Edinburgh.

Not long after this we received another email from the OC of 87 SQN asking if we would build him a similar model as he was about to leave the SQN and would like a memento of his time at the Squadron. We were happy to help him with another “Mozzie” model and it resides in his office at his new posting.
