In addition to the three 1:72 scale COLLINS Class Submarine Models commissioned by the United States Navy, an additional smaller model was commissioned. The scale of 1:200 was selected for this smaller model, which was used as a presentation.
The model measures 385mm with a beam of 42mm. The main hull was made from a piece of electrical conduit with strips of .25mm styrene wrapped around the tube to represent the “Cans” or 18 segments of the straight section of hull. This way a small seam line is left around the hull when moulded. The bow and stern sections were shaped from styrene and automotive putty and cast in Polyurethane resin.
The upper casing and “Fin” were shaped in a similar fashion to the bow and stern section and then had all the details carved into the surface. Along with the four “X” configured rudders, the forward dive planes and small bow sonar, these were all cast in Polyurethane resin to allow follow on models to be produced. Casting in this medium is ideal, as any small details on the original will be reproduced in the copies made.
The model was finished in automotive low sheen black and the sonar and other details finished in various shades of dark grey. Masts and periscopes were turned from brass rod, painted and added to the model along with the small seven bladed screw, which was hand made from styrene. The model was then placed into a one-piece Perspex display case on a lacquered Australian “Blackwood” base, ready for presentation to her new owner.
