Just prior to Christmas 2011 we received a request from BABCOCK MARINE in Adelaide asking if we could supply one of our small COLLINS Class Submarine models for a presentation to one of their head staff who was leaving after a long career with them. He had had a long record of participation with the COLLINS and they thought it appropriate to present him with something to remind him of his time with them.
Our 1:200 scale COLLINS was a little large for what they required, however we had always wanted to produce a smaller model of the COLLINS. Whilst researching the smaller model, I found that a friend who produces lots of 1:350 scale models had in the pipeline a 1:350 scale COLLINS. He hurriedly completed the mould and poured the first copy. The result was a superb casting with lots of little engraved detail and fittings.
During this process, BABCOCK contacted us and requested more of these models. They finally decided to purchase five models for future presentations. Steve poured five sets and sent them off to us. He did this whilst in the middle of preparing to move house and cities and positions in the RAAF, so it was greatly appreciated.
The models were completed in a couple of days and painted in semi-gloss black with highlighted details. The screws were laser cut, fitted to a cast hub and painted gold. Each model was fitted to a polished Jarrah timber base and clear acrylic display case. All five models came out beautifully and arrived with plenty of time for their presentation dinner. These models were a perfect gift for someone involved with the project or serving on the COLLINS Class Boats.
