Built for Advanced Power Machinery (APM) of Melbourne were three models of their Ground Power Units (GPU) used to supply ground power to military and large civilian aircraft. These units comprise of a four wheeled trailer containing a large diesel generator and support gear to be used as a stand alone power source when aircraft are shut down.
The models supplied where two 1:35 scale models and a 1:16 scale model. The smaller models where of two different versions. A military 90KVA unit and a QANTAS 180KVA unit were produced from scratch. Each model was mounted onto a polished timber base with a tarmac section under the GPU.
The 1:16 scale model was of the 90KVA Military version and had opening side panels to show the generator and other support equipment. This model was also scratch built from Evergreen styrene. The generator was fully detailed with fuel lines, fuel tanks, radiator with fan and filters etc. The doors were made to open and shut along with a detailed control panel in the rear of the unit.
The model was mounted onto a polished timber base and an acrylic display case fitted to protect the model when on display. The models were handed over and placed on display at the 2009 Avalon Air Show.
