Some time ago DMG was requested to construct two models. One of the Bathurst Corvette, HMAS BENDIGO (J187). The other was the Modified River Class Frigate, HMAS CONDAMINE (K698). Both these ships hold a special place in the heart of our client, whose father had commanded both BENDIGO in 1943 during World War II and CONDAMINE in 1947.
BENDIGO was constructed to the scale of 1:72 to match that of the CONDAMINE and to take advantage of the hulls and fittings already available through APS Models. This gave the model a length of approximately 820mm.
The hull was constructed of fibreglass whilst the superstructure was built of Evergreen Styrene with timber, metal and cast resin fittings. The model was completed in her 1943 camouflage scheme of light grey, dark grey and charcoal in a zig-zag pattern along the ships side and superstructure. This pattern was designed to make it hard for enemy ships and aircraft to visually target the vessel. With this pattern and her timber fore deck, she makes for a striking model.
The model was mounted on keel blocks and mounted on a polished timber base with Perspex display case to keep the model safe and dust free in her new home.
