Whilst an intense contest was going on for the company to carry out the proposed modifications to the Royal Australian Navy’s “ADELAIDE” Class Guided Missile Frigates, DMG was asked by TENIX Defence Systems to construct a full model of their proposed changes to the FFG for the Guided Missile Frigate Upgrade Programme (FFGUP).
An existing model of an FFG (owned by DMG) had already been modified, but another model was required that would remain at TENIX DS headquarters at Williamtown, Victoria. The model was commenced but during construction, the announcement came that TENIX’s bid for the FFGUP was unsuccessful. As a result, TENIX asked that the model be completed as “NEWCASTLE” as originally built by the yard.
The model is now used at trade exhibitions around the Asia-Pacific Region, but is usually on display at TENIX Defence Systems Building in North Sydney.
