As Part of “Project Protector” for Royal New Zealand Navy, TENIX Maritime Defence commissioned DMG to construct a 1:150 scale model of their designed 85 Metre Off-Shore Patrol Vessel or OPV.
Based on a hull designed by a Canadian Ship builder and used for several other Naval projects around the world including the Irish Fisheries Patrol Vessels and the Mauritian Coast Guard Vessels, the vessel was designed by TENIX for the RNZN and the two vessels will be constructed in Williamstown. They will be named HMNZS WELLINGTON (P-55) and HMNZS OTAGO (P-148).
The model’s hull was constructed and molded by APS models in Fibre-glass and the superstructure and fittings cast in polyurethane resin and styrene plastics. The ship’s guard rails where produced in Photo-etched Brass.
The model was completed in the RNZN colour scheme and placed in a one piece acrylic display case supplied by CityWest Plastics of Sydney, and an aluminium transit case supplied by Samuelsons of Sydney for transporting the models between Australia and New Zealand for displays and meetings.
She will be used at official functions and displays along with the models of the Multi-Role Vessel and the 55m In-Shore Patrol Vessel models also constructed by DMG for TENIX. Four more models have recently been delivered. Three for TENIX and one for a collector in the US.
